You might be packing for a cross-country move, or you might need to save space at home and must decide what goes into a storage rental unit.   1. Make use of foam plates. I've always been concerned about the dishes whenever I've moved. While we do get them special boxes, I'm concerned about scratches and chipping while they're on the road. However, I recently discovered that placing a foam picnic plate between each dish in your stack creates a nice, protective buffer. Best of all, these plates are inexpensive, and you can store them and reuse them for another move.
  2. Duct tape in various colors. Of course, you'll label every box, but if you pack them in a unit, the labels may be difficult to see right away. Get rolls of colored duct tape and place a strip on each box for a more vibrant, color-coordinated organization. Assign a specific color to each room - kitchen, bedroom, etc. - and you'll be able to find your belongings more quickly.
  3. When it came to silverware, I used to just keep them in their tray and store the tray in a box. I'll use rubber bands next time to better secure forks, spoons, and other utensils. That sounds like a good way to keep some from slipping through the cracks in a box.
  4. Boxes that are free. The liquor store is one of our first stops on packing day. We understand that moving home is stressful enough, but if you call ahead, some store managers will let you have emptied boxes. Liquor boxes, in particular, are strong and suitable for storing some heavy items. The best part is that they're completely free!
